TECH TIPS

The winter months are just around the corner Remember it install your weather front on your grill It will help your diesel engine keep warm and help maintain cabin heat

TECH TIPS

Tire Pressure

As the air temperature lowers, the speed of the air molecules lowers resulting in lower air pressures. With Lower air pressure it increases a tire’s rolling effort on the road, which translates to higher fuel costs. A good rule of thumb is that for every 10 degrees Fahrenheit the temperature drops, tires running at 100 psi [pounds per square inch] can drop approximately two psi To ensure tires are running at peak performance they should be checked on a regular basis. Under-inflated tires can be an issue in the winter, but over-inflation can also be detrimental. Maintaining the recommend tire pressure is important. By being proactive in your tire maintenance, you can ensure that your equipment has the best traction while minimizing premature tire wear that can lead to unpredicted downtime and costs.

Tire Maintenance

Wheel care is critical. In the winter months you could see frozen wheel hubs, ice-encrusted rims, flat spotting, and low tire pressure. Before the temperature drop, tire, maintenance is essential.

TECH TIPS

You also need to look at the rims for salt, dirt, ice, and snow that can get caught inside you rims, causing a false imbalance diagnosis where the driver will detect a vibration. That could cause alignment issues or bad vibration causing wear and tear on the front-end components, drive line, and rear-end components. Washing out the rims on a regular basis in the winter months will help with the build of debris. Rims

TECH TIPS

Engine Coolant Freeze Points

Cummins ISB Engines For a Cummins ISB engine, the manufacturer spec for freeze point is between -32° to -54°C (-25° to - 65°F) . Ethylene glycol concentration is not to exceed 68%. Maintaining SCA concentration between 0.3 and 0.8 units/L (1.2 to 3.0 units/U.S. gal) is critical to preventing cylinder bore cavitation. This is only applied if you use standard coolant.

In 2017/2018 model year the Thomas C2 Cummins ISB engine was filled with OAT coolant.

Please make sure you look at the sticker by the coolant reserve to know what type of coolant your engine came with.

Here is a note from the Cummins engine manual on OAT coolant: Organic acid technology (OAT)/Extended Life Coolants use high levels of salts of organic acids for cylinder liner pitting protection and do not use nitrite and or molybdate. Therefore, these coolants do not have SCA numbers. Additionally, OAT additives deplete much slower than conventional additives and as a result OAT coolant do not require addition of SCA products.

TECH TIPS

Engine Coolant Freeze Points

Detroit DD5 Engines For a Detroit DD5 engine the manufacturer spec for freeze point is in between -31° to -41°C (-24 to -42°F) . There is exception to the rule depending on the climate. The coolant that is currently in the DD5 engine is Organic Acid Technology (OAT). These coolants require less maintenance over the useful life of the engine.
